Five minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport and considerably more interesting than its reputation as a transit town would suggest – Negombo has spent centuries developing a distinct coastal character shaped by Portuguese missionaries, Dutch canal engineers, a working Catholic fishing community, and the particular golden-hour light that falls across the lagoon in the late afternoon. The Dutch canal network, the colonial church architecture, the fish market at dawn, and the seafood that a town this close to the ocean does better than most: Negombo is a first or last impression worth making the most of.
