The Pekoe Trail Grand Trek

Tour Overview

Sri Lanka’s most ambitious trekking journey – a 13-night, multi-stage expedition along the Pekoe Trail, Sri Lanka’s first designated long-distance walking route, running through the tea country highlands from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via the historic tea estates of Galaha, Loolkandura, Bogawantalawa, Maskeliya, and Haputale before the Ella section and the final highland arrival at Nuwara Eliya. This is the definitive Island Pulse Travels trekking product and one of the most complete and rewarding active travel experiences available on the island.

Day-By-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1

Kandy – Pekoe Trail Gateway & Cultural Orientation

Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport and private transfer to Kandy – the cultural capital and the Pekoe Trail’s starting point. A guided afternoon in Kandy’s heritage environment – the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the lakeside walks – provides the cultural orientation before the trekking begins. The tea country visible in the hills above the city is tomorrow’s world.

2

Day 2

Hanthana Mountain Range – Stage 1 to Galaha

Transfer to the Hanthana Mountain Range’s forested ridges for the opening stage of the Pekoe Trail, trekking through highland forest and the first tea estate landscapes toward Galaha with panoramic views across the Knuckles mountain range appearing and disappearing through the vegetation. The Pekoe Trail’s first day establishes the rhythm that will define the next 12 – steady, highland, fragrant with the smell of tea and forest.

3

Day 3

Loolkandura – Where Ceylon Tea Began

Stage 2 of the Pekoe Trail leads to Loolkandura – the site of Sri Lanka’s first commercial tea plantation, established by James Taylor in 1867, where the idea of Ceylon tea as a global industry began in the furrows of a single experimental plot. Walking through these colonial-era estate roads and historic plantation rows with an Island Pulse Travels guide who knows the history gives the journey an unexpected depth of narrative alongside its physical pleasure.

4

Day 4

Hatton – Estate Roads & Castlereagh Reservoir Views

Transfer deeper into tea country toward Hatton for a trekking stage that passes through colonial bungalow estate roads with views across the Castlereagh Reservoir – one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Sri Lankan highlands, the water sitting like a mirror among the tea estate slopes.

5

Day 5

Bogawantalawa – The Golden Valley of Tea

Trekking across the Bogawantalawa Valley – often called the Golden Valley of Tea for the extraordinary quality of its highland production and the visual richness of its estate landscape – passing through farming villages and plantation viewpoints with the southern highlands visible at range.

6

Day 6

Maskeliya – Adam’s Peak Views & Highland Ridges

Highland ridge trekking toward Maskeliya with the distinctive conical silhouette of Adam’s Peak appearing and disappearing through the cloud – a trekking day that combines physical satisfaction with one of the most evocative landscape experiences in the Pekoe Trail’s full length.

7

Day 7

Haputale – Lipton’s Seat Region Arrival

Transfer toward Haputale and the Lipton’s Seat viewpoint region – the elevated ridgeline from which Sir Thomas Lipton once surveyed his tea empire and which provides one of the most comprehensive panoramas of the southern highland tea country available from any single vantage point.

8

Day 8

Haputale – Plantation Routes & Lipton’s Seat Viewpoint

A full Haputale trekking day – Pekoe Trail stages through tea plantation routes and forest trails, culminating in the extraordinary Lipton’s Seat viewpoint over the southern plains. On a clear morning, the southern coast is visible from here across 50 kilometres of lowland landscape.

9

Day 9

St Catherine’s & Thangamale Sanctuary – Forest & Mountain Ridges

Trekking toward St Catherine’s through eucalyptus forests and mountain ridges with the southern highland landscape gradually revealing itself in a new orientation as the trail bends toward Ella’s approach.

10

Day 10

Ella – Nine Arch Bridge & Pekoe Trail Highland Section

Transfer to Ella – one of the trail’s most iconic sections – for an afternoon at the Nine Arch Bridge and the surrounding tea estate landscape that the Pekoe Trail weaves through in its Ella stages.

11

Day 11

Ella – Little Adam’s Peak & Ella Gap Section of Pekoe Trail

The Ella stage of the Pekoe Trail through Little Adam’s Peak and the Ella Gap viewpoints – sweeping views across Sri Lanka’s southern hill country from trails that move through active tea estates, cloud forest, and the highland gaps that give Ella its dramatic character.

12

Day 12

Demodara Loop & Ella Highland Forest Trails

Exploring additional highland trails around Ella including the Demodara Railway Loop – one of the most famous engineering achievements on the hill country railway, where the track spirals through a tunnel under the Ella station itself to gain altitude – alongside forest walks in the surrounding highland landscape.

13

Day 13

Nuwara Eliya – Colonial Highland Arrival & Tea Country Finale

Scenic drive through tea country to Nuwara Eliya for a final highland day – Gregory Lake, the colonial town centre, and the tea estate landscapes that have defined the entire journey brought together in one last afternoon above 2,000 metres.
