Kandy Cultural Heritage Tour

Tour Overview

Sri Lanka’s cultural capital – the last royal city of the Sinhalese kings, home to the world’s most revered Buddhist relic, and the living repository of the Kandyan artistic and ceremonial tradition – deserves a full day of genuine attention. This tour gives it that, from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic’s morning puja to the evening’s theatrical Kandyan cultural performance.

Tour Highlights

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Sri Dalada Maligawa is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world – a moated, gilded temple complex housing the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha that has been the focal point of Sri Lankan spiritual and royal life for fifteen centuries. The morning puja ceremony, when drummers perform in the outer courtyard and the inner shrine fills with jasmine and incense, is an experience of atmospheric power that stays with every visitor regardless of their personal faith.

  • Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens

One of Asia’s most complete botanical collections – 147 acres on the Mahaweli River containing over 4,000 labelled species including the orchid house, bamboo grove, and the famous Avenue of Royal Palms, with free-roaming macaques and giant fruit bats providing unexpected wildlife theatre alongside the botanical heritage.

  • Kandy Lake & Evening Cultural Dance

The artificial lake built by the last Kandyan king creates the city’s most beautiful public space – a circular waterfront promenade with the moated temple on one side and tree-covered hills on the other. The evening Kandyan cultural performance – fire-walking, Ves dancing, ceremonial drumming, and plate-spinning – provides a theatrical and genuinely culturally significant conclusion to the day.
