Hidden Waterfalls & Rainforest Expedition

Tour Overview

An expedition through Sri Lanka’s least-visited interior mountain valleys – seeking out the hidden waterfalls, wilderness landscapes, and rainforest environments that the island’s interior contains in extraordinary abundance but that almost no tour company knows well enough to include. Island Pulse Travels has developed this itinerary from direct field knowledge of these remote and beautiful areas.

Day-By-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1

Belihuloya – Mountain Valley Arrival

Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport and the long, beautiful drive to Belihuloya – a remote mountain valley region of rivers, forest, and highland scenery that provides the starting point for the expedition. The arrival itself, as the road descends into a valley of extraordinary natural beauty surrounded by forested ridges, is the journey’s opening statement.

2

Day 2

Surathali Ella Waterfalls & Wilderness Stargazing

Trekking through the Belihuloya valley to the Surathali Ella waterfalls – cascades through tropical forest accessible only on foot from the valley floor – followed by an evening wilderness stargazing experience from the valley’s dark mountain skies, far from any urban light pollution. In a country where clear highland nights can be genuinely extraordinary, Belihuloya’s elevation and remoteness produce a night sky of remarkable depth and clarity.

3

Day 3

Bambarakanda Falls – Sri Lanka’s Tallest Waterfall

The drive to Bambarakanda Falls – Sri Lanka’s highest waterfall, a single 263-metre cascade visible from many kilometres away on clear days, surrounded by highland forest trails and the kind of remote landscape that makes the journey to it feel properly earned.

4

Day 4

Horton Plains Foothills – Baker’s Bend & Montane Forest

Transfer toward the Horton Plains foothills and Ohiya for an exploration of the escarpment’s viewpoints and montane forest habitats – the cloud forest character of the plateau’s lower reaches experienced from below the famous World’s End cliff.

5

Day 5

Ginigathhena – Aberdeen Falls

The drive to Ginigathhena for a trekking visit to Aberdeen Falls – one of Sri Lanka’s most dramatic and least-visited highland cascades, a powerful two-tiered waterfall surrounded by undisturbed forest that rewards the effort required to reach it with a quality of natural solitude that the more accessible falls cannot offer.

6

Day 6

Ratnapura Rainforest – Gem Mining Heritage & Bopath Ella

The Ratnapura region – Sri Lanka’s historic gem mining heartland, where the subsoil of the river valleys has yielded sapphires, rubies, and cat’s eyes for millennia – and the beautiful Bopath Ella waterfall, a leaf-shaped cascade whose natural formation in the shape of a Bo tree leaf gives it a particularly striking visual character.

7

Day 7

Ratnapura Rainforest Trekking – Hidden Forest Trails

A full day of guided trekking through the forest trails and waterfall cascades of the Ratnapura region – endemic birdlife, forest stream crossings, and the particular sensory richness of a wet zone forest environment at its most productive and most untouched.

8

Day 8

Deniyaya – Sinharaja Rainforest Gateway Arrival

Transfer to Deniyaya, the southern gateway to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve – a small town surrounded by the buffer zone communities whose relationship with the forest defines the conservation story of Sri Lanka’s most ecologically significant natural landscape.

9

Day 9

Sinharaja UNESCO Rainforest – Deep Forest Exploration

A full guided day inside Sinharaja’s primary rainforest – moving through trail sections away from the more visitor-frequented areas to access the deeper forest environments where the endemic flora and fauna are most concentrated and most visible. Island Pulse Travels uses specialist naturalist guides with deep knowledge of Sinharaja’s less-travelled sections.

10

Day 10

Southern Countryside – Stargazing & Coastal Arrival

The scenic countryside drive toward the southern coast via Akuressa, arriving for a final evening of clear-sky stargazing along the quiet southern coastal landscapes away from urban light before an overnight in the Matara region.

11

Day 11
